What Are Stimming Behaviours?
Stimming (self-stimulatory behavior) refers to repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that help a child regulate emotions, process sensory information, or express excitement. Stimming is common in children with autism and can also be seen in other children.
✨ Why do children stim? ✔️ To cope with sensory processing differences ✔️ To regulate emotions during stress, excitement, or anxiety ✔️ To calm their body and mind ✔️ To improve focus and concentration ✔️ To express happiness or excitement ✔️ To manage overwhelming environments
Stimming is not always harmful. Understanding the reason behind the behavior helps therapists and parents provide appropriate support while encouraging meaningful communication and participation in daily activities.
