π£οΈ Understanding Different Types of Speech Disfluencies
Speech disfluencies are interruptions in the natural flow of speech. They can occur during language development and vary from one child to another.
Common types of disfluencies include: β’ Repetitions β Repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., "b-b-ball") β’ Prolongations β Stretching a sound longer than expected (e.g., "sssssnake") β’ Blocks β A brief pause or feeling "stuck" before a word comes out β’ Observation & Assessment β A speech-language pathologist can evaluate speech patterns to determine whether monitoring or support may be appropriate.
Many children experience temporary disfluencies as they develop language skills. If speech difficulties persist, increase over time, or affect communication, a professional evaluation can help identify the most appropriate support.
At Origin Child Development Center, our Speech-Language Pathologists provide individualized assessments and evidence-informed therapy plans to support confident communication.
