🗣️ Understanding Secondary Behaviors During Speech Disfluencies
Some children who experience speech disfluencies may also show physical behaviors while trying to speak. These are often called secondary behaviors and can vary from child to child.
Examples may include: • Frequent eye blinking or facial movements • Body tension or stiffness while speaking • Looking away or avoiding eye contact during moments of difficulty • Physical reactions that a Speech-Language Pathologist may observe during an assessment
Not every child who stutters or has speech disfluencies will display these behaviors. A comprehensive evaluation helps identify each child's unique communication needs and guides individualized support when appropriate.
At Origin Child Development Center, our Speech-Language Pathologists provide personalized assessments and evidence-informed therapy to help children communicate with greater confidence.
